My
career has spanned various hospital based nursing and administrative
positions. Over the years I developed passions for systems
improvement, accreditation and licensure issues, clinical
data collection and analysis, and clinical nursing. Because
of this, I enjoy the challenge of making current systems work
more effectively and efficiently by helping staff understand
and incorporate accreditation requirements in these systems
while focusing on improving the quality of care delivery.
I take a practical approach to improving quality and achieving
JCAHO/JCI accreditation. My experiences in hospitals of all
sizes, including leading academic medical centers and small
private hospitals, have been great learning experiences for
me and have taught me to apply my knowledge and expertise
in different settings.
Working with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers
has been a wonderful privilege for me for many years. I have
addressed audiences of all sizes within hospitals, as well
as at state and national level meetings.

a nurse by education. I have spent over 40 years in many components
of health care. The last ten years have been devoted to consulting
throughout the United States with more than 75 healthcare
organizations of all sizes and demographics from the small
community hospital to 1000+ multi-campus teaching institutions.
The primary focus for each facility has been to provide the
best health care possible while achieving and maintaining
accreditation from the Joint Commission and other relevant
regulatory bodies.
The various experiences that prepared me for the successful
consulting role include all facets of nursing, management
and preventive health care – medical, surgical, obstetrical,
administration and Quality Management. In addition, I opened
a Community College Nursing Program and served as the Director
for five years, opened an acute care, primarily surgical hospital
and provided administrative and clinical service. I have served
on several special issue projects for the National Association
for Healthcare Quality , am a charter member of and have served
several terms on the North Carolina Association for Healthcare
Quality Board and nationally served on the Healthcare Quality

Hospital
facilities have become my specialty and first love. Complex
engineering systems, constantly evolving technology and the
humanitarian mission of hospitals have all contributed to my
interest. Hospitals are giant puzzles with the pieces constantly
shifting. I enjoy working with alongside Facilities personnel
assembling those pieces into a clear picture of what is needed,
how much it will cost, and what is the most logical and efficient
way to accomplish it. Joint Commission certification hinges
on identifying facility shortcomings and a written master plan
for their remediation. And a comprehensive master plan is vital
to the Facilities department and Hospital Administration for
budgetary projections for the next 5, 10 and 20 years.
My 37 year facilities engineering career has come full circle
in the past 10 years. During the 70’s my company conducted
numerous facility assessments for hospitals, schools, and military
bases in the U.S. and Pacific Rim which led to the design of
renovation projects throughout the 80’s and 90’s.
In the mid-90’s my focus became assessment of hospital
facilities and operations, master planning, and renovations.
In the past 12 years I have been an engineering consultant and
Director of Facilities at a 750 bed hospital in Raleigh, North
Carolina (WakeMed Regional Hospital). During that time I conducted
facility assessments and designed master plans and renovation
projects for several large hospital campuses including Duke
University Medical Center, University of North Carolina Medical
Center, WakeMed Regional Medical Center, Cape Fear Valley Medical
Center, High Point Medical Center, First Health Moore Regional
Hospital, New Hanover Regional Medical Center and others. |
